Homeschooling is of personal
interest to me.
As you are probably already aware the legal age to enter public schooling in New Zealand is six, although most parents choose to send their children from their fifth birthday. It has surprised me over the years that so many New Zealand parents are not aware that they can delay their child's entry by a full year. They can wait a few months or many months until they feel their child is ready.
From the age of six if parents choose to make homeschooling a long term lifestyle choice, then they must apply for an exemption for their child. For an application you can contact the Ministry of Education by writing to Private Bag 92644, Symonds Street, Auckland, or emailling: enquiries.auckland@minedu.govt.nz. You can also contact them by telephone or fax on (09) 632-9400 or (09) 632-9401 respectively. For more information about homeschooling, perhaps finding like minded people or how to fill in that exemption form, please see the links provided to the right.
Literacy Curriculums
There are many great literacy curriculums that you can choose from. It will come down to what you feel is the best approach for you and your child/ren. Many of the curriculums, whilst similar in their teaching method, have their own unique way of making it interesting or easier for children.
You will find a link to your left to our 'Literacy Curriculums' page. This page has a selection of different literacy curriculums that are available. Don't forget that we welcome contact from you with any contributions you would like to make to this list.
Remember that once you decide on a curriculum it does pay to 'shop around'. Many used curriculums can be found on Ebay or Trademe which will save you money.
